Jason Holton Shooting ALACHUA COUNTY, Florida — A motorist identified as a person of interest in a double homicide died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound Tuesday evening following a high-speed chase on Interstate 75, authorities confirmed.
The pursuit began after the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office was alerted that the suspect, wanted in connection with a double homicide in Union County, was traveling through northern Alachua County in a black Ford F-150. Deputies attempted to stop the vehicle near mile marker 386 on I-75, but the driver fled at high speed, prompting a multi-agency pursuit along the interstate.
A Florida Highway Patrol trooper eventually performed a Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) maneuver to stop the vehicle on the west shoulder of the highway. Law enforcement officers surrounded the truck and issued repeated commands for the driver to exit. When no response was given, ACSO SWAT and tactical units approached the vehicle, discovering the driver had died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Interstate 75 was closed in both directions for several hours as investigators and emergency crews secured the scene, resulting in significant traffic delays. The highway has since reopened, with authorities advising caution for motorists in the area.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is leading the ongoing investigation into the double homicide in Union County, with support from local law enforcement. Authorities have not released the identities of the victims or the suspect, pending notification of next of kin and the completion of investigative procedures.
Officials extended condolences to the victims’ families as the multi-agency investigation continues.
